300 000 volunteers cleaning up two countries tomorrow (Apr 16)

16th of April 2010

Tomorrow, on 17th of April, civic actions on unprecedented scale are taking place – altoghether 300 000 volunteers are coming out on one day to rid two countries of illegal garbage – Slovenia and Lithuania.

200 000 people in Slovenia have signed up for clean-up day Očistimo Slovenijo aiming to collect 20 000 tons of illegal garbage from Slovenian forests, villages, and roadsides. In Lithuania approximately 100 000 people are expected to participate in cleaning up the whole country in just one day.

Initiatives are inspired by Let’s do it! clean-up in Estonia on 2008, where more than 50 000 people cleaned the country in just 5 hours, picking up more than 10 000 tons of illegal garbage. The action inspired a series on Let’s do it! country-cleanups elsewhere – on 20th of March 2010 a clean-up day engaged 110 000 volunteers in Portugal , for later this year the actions are already being prepared in Romania, in Kiev, Ukraine and in New Delhi, India.

The preparations for the clean-ups in Slovenia and Lithuania have lasted for months and involved the newest technology aimed for creating long-term solutions to prevent further illegal dumping and engaging volunteers to the process. Nara Petrovič from Slovenian team explains: „More than 10.400 illegal dumpsites have been registered in an easily accessible registry, that will continue to be publicly available on the internet, and will be regularly updated. It includes all important data about all illegal dumpsite, as well as photos. This is an important asset for the prevention and monitoring of future illegal waste dumping.“

The scale of the initiative has made it an extensive co-operation project in both countries, involving the state, private enterprises and NGO’s and volunteer groups, all adding up to hundreds of different organizations contributing to the mission of getting the country cleaned. At the heart of the movement is core-team of motivated volunteers, to bring all the partners efforts together and organize the volunteer action.

Vytautas Krasnickas from Lithunania adds: „All Lithuania is included into the event, all institutions and organizations are involved. All politicians are in. There will be direct TV translation on TV3 and 7 concerts in Vilnius, Panevezys, Klaipeda, Siauliai, Alytus, Marijampole, Taurage. There will be about 20 000 trees planted during the event. Everything is done without money and just with support of volunteers enthusiasm.“
